Making a Plan

Ah, it's Friday. And I expect you have weekend plans. Do they include a creative activity? If not , (and you would like them to,) it's time to make a plan. Having a plan is a recipe for success.

Here are some good planning tips:

1. Write your art plan/ goal down.

When you make a commitment on paper it is easier to organize your concept and proof it. Having an itemized project list helps you to stay on track.

2. Supply list

For more complicated projects, you don't always have the necessary tools on hand. You don't want to waste your valuable creative time , shopping for supplies. So make a list early in the week so that you have your materials in

house when you are ready to work.

3. Gather your supplies

It is extremely annoying to finally sit down to work on something and realize that you need to keep getting up for things you have forgotten.

4. Clear a working space for yourself

This might actually be more difficult than working on any other project. Claiming a comfortable, welcoming, working space in your home may well be an impossible task. You will have to make compromises. But

aim for an open place, with as much natural light as possible. My friend Jill has taught me that candles in your working space, with music if you like that , and incense all help to enhance concentration. For myself I actually keep a movie ( that i have already seen) running when I am working because it helps me stay grounded. And chocolate...chocolate is very grounding:)

5. Set a date and time on your calendar

If its written down , its more likely to happen. Set a time and Just show up.

If you think you have to wait until you "feel creative" you will probably spend 1% of your time engaged in art activities. You will most likely feel creative AFTER you immerse yourself , not before :). One of my favourite expressions is by the brilliant educator Dian Marino.

She tells us " You make the path by walking" .

So just do it.

6. Invite an artist friend to work on a project at the same time

People often find it helpful to have company.

Making a commitment with a friend helps to increase

accountability and motivation.

I hope you have a creative weekend. I am actually working this weekend but i still intend to get a lick or two done on various projects. After all, my art desk has been prepared and I wrote out an itemized plan with my calligraphy marker , on hand pressed paper ....I am ready for success.
