Yep. I really don't like making a mess. I am very product driven. My goal product is radiance, not mess-takes!! A lot of ink has been spilled over the idea of process versus product. Time and again you hear about how important it is to focus on the process and not worry about the product.
While I am inclined to believe that advice is horse hockey pucks, I can also reluctantly concede that there is some value in making a mess.
In some ways a mess is a form of exploration. If we are lucky it is sometimes in the discards of life that we find jewels. An artistic mess allows the creator an opportunity to play and discover colours, textures and patterns to develop, recreate, or avoid as the case may be. The expression " you can't make an omelette without cracking the eggs " can be transferred to the inevitable messiness of mark making.
Try to stay the course and navigate through the discomfort of messy hands, messy workspace and disappointing results. You are probably reacting to years of hearing "don't make a mess". It's difficult to recover from your child hood programming. But somewhere in you is the kid who LOVED to fingerpaint, who could sit in mud and draw with a stick, who could connect the random dots in the world and create a new one.
Try to embrace the inner child and the mess.
You can always clean up later if you truly feel you have to!
